Meet Withness John Issaya

Withness John Isaya was born on June 2nd, 2006, in the Maasai heartland of Monduli, Tanzania. Raised in a tightly knit and deeply traditional community, her early years were shaped by strict cultural expectations — especially for girls.

Her family included two sisters and a brother, and though both her parents were present, it was her mother, Einoti, who guided her most closely. Einoti, a woman of courage and conviction, knew the dangers that could lie ahead for her daughters in a community where forced marriage was still considered normal. She had lived that reality herself. And she was determined that her children would not suffer the same fate.

Withness attended primary school and proudly completed Class 7 — an important milestone. But just as she was beginning to envision her next steps, her father began to pressure her into a forced marriage. She was still a child, with dreams of becoming a teacher — but in her father’s eyes, she was ready to be someone’s wife.

Einoti would not allow it. She took Withness and brought her to her grandmother’s home in secret. They told no one where she was. For Withness, it meant a life in hiding — spending most days indoors to protect her safety — but it also meant survival. Quietly, she continued her education, completing secondary school under constant fear and stress.

When they returned to Monduli, the situation at home worsened. Withness’s parents began to fight regularly. Her mother’s bold stance against forced marriage made her a target. Eventually, Einoti had to flee — not just to protect herself, but also to keep her children safe from a father who had grown cold and neglectful.

But the danger didn’t end there. Again, her father tried to force Withness into marriage. This time, he organized a group of local youth to ambush and abduct her — a cruel and violent tradition used to coerce young girls into marriage. It was a horrifying moment that echoed the trauma her mother had endured years earlier.

That’s when SGI – Seed Grant Impact stepped in. With the help of SGI, Einoti and Withness escaped once more — this time with a support system strong enough to hold them. The path ahead was still uncertain, but for the first time, they were not walking it alone.

Withness had always dreamed of becoming a teacher. But the years of trauma had affected her studies — her grades no longer reflected her full potential. Instead of giving up, she found a new purpose: to become a social development worker, with a goal to transform harmful Maasai cultural practices from within. She chose to turn her pain into purpose — a rare kind of strength in someone so young.

With help from SGI and a few compassionate volunteers, Withness began her first year at Noble College Trust, studying social development. Her progress has been inspiring — not just academically, but emotionally. She is slowly rebuilding her confidence, one day at a time.

In July 2025, Withness officially began her six-week academic field placement — a crucial part of her first-year curriculum. From July 25th to September 14th, she will be staying with the trusted SGI host family — the Muros — to ensure she remains safe, focused, and supported.

Supported by Meditrip, STN and SGI Withness was able to start her second year in college. Making her a proud student with the dream to change the Maasai Community for future girls like herself.
